About Us

Genesis One Candles began out of necessity after our family faced health issues linked to everyday toxins in household and beauty products. We had to remove nearly everything—but I wasn’t ready to give up the candles and products I loved. So, I began creating clean alternatives that smell amazing and are safe for the body. What started with candles has now grown to include wax melts, bath bombs, lotion, lotion bars, and more.
What Our Candles Are Free From
- BHT - is currently banned in the EU, Australia, Canada and Japan, but not in the US! BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in various industries, including food, cosmetics, and personal care products. While it is approved for use by regulatory authorities, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on human health. Studies suggest that BHT may have negative effects on the liver, kidney, and thyroid function. Additionally, it has been linked to allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and hormone disruption. Furthermore, BHT has been classified as a possible carcinogen by some organizations. While further research is needed to fully understand its long-term effects, it is advisable to exercise caution and minimize exposure to BHT by opting for products that do not contain this additive. Your health and wellbeing deserve products that prioritize safety and natural alternatives over potentially harmful synthetic compounds like BHT.
- PFAs - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. PFAS are man-made chemicals that are highly resistant to oil, grease and water, making them common in food packaging, nonstick cookware (such as Teflon) and numerous other applications. In cosmetics, they help create a slippery shine and make products waterproof. PFAs are also known as "forever chemicals" because they do not naturally break down and have been found to accumulate in humans. There is still limited data available for these chemicals but exposure to them have been linked to several health effects including liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression and cancer.
- PEGs -Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) are petroleum-based compounds commonly used in various personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and even food. While they serve as emulsifiers, solvents, and thickeners, concerns have been raised about their potential negative effects on human health. PEGs can have a drying effect on the skin, causing irritation and stripping away natural moisture. Furthermore, they have the ability to penetrate the skin and potentially carry harmful ingredients into the body. PEGs can also be contaminated with harmful impurities, such as 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen. Prolonged or repeated exposure to PEGs has been associated with skin allergies, sensitization, and potential disruption of the body's natural barrier function.
- CMR - known or probable to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing in humans/animals), mutagenic (causing DNA mutations resulting in disease), and reprotoxic (affecting fertility, as well as cause developmental toxicity in the offspring). We do not use any materials in our formulations that are known toxins. However, some naturally derived components (such as terpenes) of ingredients may be listed on CMR statements and SDS documentation. These components are not added to the formula but rather exist as a chemical constituent of the materials used (which includes plant-based ingredients). Please let us know if you have any specific questions about CMRs and/or our formulations.
- 'Forever Chemicals' PBTs - PBT substances are known to be toxic, remain in the environment for a long period of time, and are able to accumulate in body tissue.
- Lilial - Lilial is a very common synthetic fragrance ingredient that is currently banned in the UK and Europe but not the USA! Lilial has been identified as having endocrine-disrupting properties - it can interfere with natural hormone functions and may pose risks to fertility and fetal development. Lilial is used in a variety of products to impart floral notes in a fragrance mixture. You're most likely to find its commercial name, "lilial," on product labels, but it is also known as butylphenyl methylpropional and p-t-Butyl-alpha-methylhydrocinnamaldehyde.
- Parabens - parabens are man-made chemicals often used as preservatives in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food/beverages. Common parabens are methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.
- Phthalates - Phthalates are harmful to health primarily because they are known as endocrine disruptors, capable of interfering with the body's hormonal system. These chemicals can mimic or block natural hormones, leading to a range of adverse effects on human health. Prolonged exposure to phthalates has been linked to reproductive issues, including reduced fertility and developmental abnormalities in the reproductive organs of both males and females. Moreover, phthalates are associated with an increased risk of asthma and allergies, and some studies suggest a potential link to certain types of cancer. Their ubiquitous presence in everyday products and their ability to leach into the environment make phthalates a concerning public health issue, necessitating the adoption of precautionary measures to minimize exposure and potential health risks.
Why Clean Matters
Most candles on the market contain hidden toxins. Many are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct that, when burned releases harmful chemicals, such as toluene and benzene. Even candles labeled as “soy blends” often contain paraffin.
Another concern is fragrance. The word may look harmless on a label, but it’s actually a legal loophole that allows companies to hide a mixture of more than 3,500 chemicals under the term “proprietary”.
At Genesis One Candles we believe that what you breathe and put on your skin truly matters. That’s why we’ve carefully crafted our products to be safe for your health, your home and the planet.
